South Lakes Safari Zoo

Attraction | Ulverston | Angleterre | Royaume Uni

A day out at South Lakes Zoo. There was a bit of a queue to get in which is not great when the weather is bad. Entrance is a long pathway which is a bit muddy so obviously suitable footwear is a must. The Zoo is quite big so lots of walking around. There was a super long queue to feed the giraffes which you pay for in advance. The food available is terrible so taking your own food is advisable. There is also limited seating inside in bad weather and very basic seats nothing fancy at all. As expected there is a shop which is quite pricey. When we went it was very wet and there were huge puddles everywhere. It would be a different experience ( better) in summer months but I can’t imagine the queues to get in or for any food then. I wouldn’t return if I’m honest. We traveled from Newcastle and I couldn’t wait to leave but my Grandson loved it. The children’s play area was swamped and he fell in a huge muddy puddle. The animals seemed well cared for but I do think the whole place could do with an overhaul.

Second time I've been this year, really enjoyed the feed experience with the lemurs, spider monkeys, baboons and kangaroos. Really appreciate the hard work that the zoo is doing in trying to protect endangered species, and save many species from being poached and exploited. All the animals seem happy and well cared for, staff very friendly and all in all a great experience. I look forward to visiting next year.

We brought tickets in advance as they were on a deal. It was a very nice little zoo, I would say 2-3 hours is enough, the exhibits were nice and the animals looked healthy and happy. The map was a little difficult to read but it was ok and we got around.

It was very good considering it was a cold, snowy day, but we had booked to partake in a snow leopard experience for a special birthday treat so didn’t let the weather put us off. We’ve been here before numerous times and do enjoy our visits, it has a very unique offering of a walk through aviary and a all through animal section (which was sadly closed this time around) but honestly it is starting to look a little tired. The couple of staff we crossed paths with were friendly and knowledgeable, the animals we saw appeared happy and not fussed by the weather, the snow leopard experience was outstanding! I can’t help feel like the place gets a bad rep from a previous owner and bad management, we saw no issues when we were there other than it was very quiet, the place could do with a general tidy up and maybe offer more seasonal things like a Christmas themed scavenger hunt or something like that. We’ll be back for sure.

Third visit of the year, second with prearranged encounters. This time we did the Sleepy Roo's tour/feed with Giraffe, lemur, otter and jaguar. The keeper running the tour was patient, knowledgeable and very enthusiastic. Our second encounter was with the min bull rhino. An amazing 50minute experience where the keeper talked us through not only the rhinos at the zoo, but all about their lives, behaviours in great detail but in a way that our two daughters could understand and answered all of their questions. He showed us the enrichment and the process to release the rhinos out into the field which was really interesting. Our final encounter was with the primates and again a brilliant 40minutes feeding lots of apple to three different species, with a third brilliant keeper. We ate at the fish and chips restaurant, we have previously taken a picnic which we ate back at the car and re-entered but with it being mid-November we wanted something warm. Sausage and chips X2, chips beans and cheese, and fish bites and chips for £22.50 is a bargain at an attraction these days and all four of the s left full. We managed to also see all the big cats outside (tigers, lions, jaguars, lynx and snow leopard. As well as red panda, Andean bears, giraffe, maned wolf and everything in the walk through area where we used the food we bought on our way in. The staff on the feeds were incredible, the staff in the restaurant were very friendly and the staff in the shop were really helpful. Having done a lot of encounters at zoos all over the UK, these are some of the best. We have read the concerns about animal and staff welfare, but they are clearly good at hiding it, or things have definitely improved as we couldn't tell the difference between South Lakes and other parks/zoos we use.

We went on a half term deal (£2 each, 3 adults, 1 child), if we'd had to pay full price it would have been just over £100. The place did not look well kept and there were very few animals out. Was very disappointed with what we saw. The signage was poor and could easily get disorientsted. We would not go back, would not recommend.

Quite run down not a great selection of animals to be honest and a lot of the animals there was only a singular one of the species also didn't like how the rhino's were caged indoors and not free roaming outside in their paddock

Lovely day out with the grandkids, some enclosures were empty but it is October and they were probably hiding from the cold! Cafe a bit disappointing only 3 sandwiches to choose from and a lad using his hands to serve sausage rolls!

No wolves or pygmy hippo and the vultures gone so not quite as good as last visit but lynx were new to me and the tiger wasn't happy when hand feeding stopped and put on a show. I like this zoo but it's a bit of a trapse from preston.

Great place, with good animal experience. Feeding sessions are great have less animals as compared to other zoos but definitely more one to one experience with animals.
